Love Japanese Style Like We Do
Add a touch of timeless history to your kitchen with this exquisite antique folk art stoneware mixing bowl. A true vintage gem, it offers a captivating glimpse into the artistry of the Edo and Meiji eras.
A Slice of Japanese History: The Craft of Konebachi
This large mixing bowl, known as konebachi, was once crafted as provincial ware - utilitarian pottery designed for everyday use during Japan’s Edo and Meiji periods. Unlike the fine porcelain reserved for the nobility or exported abroad, these humble folk kilns produced sturdy, everyday pieces that met the needs of the common people.
These traditional wares, once regarded as simple and unremarkable, found renewed appreciation in the 20th century. In 1926, Soetsu Yanagi, along with renowned potters Shoji Hamada and Kanjiro Kawai, founded the Mingei (folk art) movement, which celebrated the beauty of everyday crafts made by unknown artisans in close harmony with nature. They believed that true beauty lies in the ordinary objects that serve us daily, made with simplicity and sincerity.
A Bowl Built to Last
Crafted for daily use, this bowl is as sturdy as it is charming. Its thick, heavy form features a slight bulge at the center that narrows at the reinforced, turned-down double lip. The inside of the bowl is marked with the characteristic impressions from kiln stacking, and the base remains unglazed to prevent the melting glaze from fusing to the kiln shelf.
Boasting the lovely pale yellow hue of Kiseto ware, this bowl’s rustic character is enhanced by its crazed glaze, subtle discolorations from years of use, and slight imperfections from the kiln. These elements add to its authentic charm and tell the story of a bygone era.
Condition
In very good condition for its age, this bowl shows modest signs of wear, with no noticeable cracks or chips, making it a beautiful and functional piece of history to enjoy for years to come.
A Versatile and Beautiful Addition to Your Home
This large stoneware bowl is not only perfect for mixing ingredients, but it also serves as a stunning display piece. Whether used to hold fruit, snacks, plants, or even as a charming home for Medaka fish, its rustic beauty will enrich any space.
