Love Japanese Style Like We Do

Step into the elegance of the past with this exquisite Kyodai (vanity), a true antique treasure from the 1920s. This delicate piece effortlessly combines history and practicality, perfect for bringing character and charm into modern homes. Its unique, compact design is ideal for those seeking something special in their space—a piece that’s both functional and full of story.

The Kyodai has deep roots in Japanese culture, dating as far back as the 8th century, long before the popular tansu and cabinetry styles. Often depicted in woodblock prints of courtesans and beautiful women from the Edo period, the vanity was an essential part of a woman's daily life. Used to store combs, hairpins, and beauty essentials, the Kyodai became synonymous with grace and style in the Japanese home.

Unlike traditional, bulky vanities, this piece’s smaller size makes it an excellent fit for contemporary spaces, offering a perfect balance of vintage appeal and modern convenience. Whether used on a tabletop or a chest, this Kyodai will stand out as a conversation piece, infusing any room with history and beauty.

The vanity features four shallow drawers and one deep drawer, each fronted with stunning mulberry wood inlays showcasing a beautifully natural grain. The drawers are adorned with charming copper handles that reflect the elegance of the Taisho era. The structure is in good condition, with minor wood shrinkage inside the drawers and slight wear to the top inlay—character marks that only add to its vintage charm.

The mirror, brackets, and decorative wooden strip are separate components. The decorative strip fits into the side of the brackets, which are then slid into the grooves at the top of the drawer section. The mirror is secured between the brackets using decorative, carved wooden screws—an elegant feature inspired by the Taisho era (1920s). The original mirror was damaged and has since been replaced with a new one, making this beautiful piece ready for immediate use.

Whether your style leans toward Japanese aesthetics or Western interiors, this vanity effortlessly complements a wide range of décor. A true conversation starter, it’s the perfect way to bring history into your home in a way that’s both beautiful and practical.
