Love Japanese Style Like We Do
Bring the tranquility of a Buddhist temple into your home with this exquisite extremely large vintage orin resting on a luxurious brocade cushion atop a striking red lacquer stand. Perfect for meditation, yoga and relaxation routines, it creates a peaceful ambiance that will elevate your home or studio.
In Buddhist temples, such large orins are traditionally placed in the Hondo (main hall) for prayer and worship, where they help to focus the mind and spirit. This set includes the orin (singing bowl), a marukindai (stand), a zabuton (cushion), and a rinbo (striker) - each piece crafted with care and steeped in tradition.
Orin (Singing Bowl)
The beautiful orin is made of finely beaten bronze, adorned with raised circular gold bosses in concentric circles on a dark brown background in the lower half. The upper section features a simple tarnished gold finish with a single line of gold circular bosses at the center. The interior is a dark brown, with delicate dents from the raised bosses on the exterior that create a mesmerizing pattern. This large piece resonates with a deep, soothing tone, its sound reverberating for an extended time, offering a rich auditory experience. The bowl is signed by both the maker and the donor to the temple, a testament to its history. In good vintage condition, the orin shows signs of use and slight wear, including some minor dents, none of which detract from its beauty or function.
Marukindai (Stand)
The marukindai stand, crafted from wood, is coated in a rich reddish-brown lacquer that has mellowed over the years, giving it a warm, inviting patina. The stand's cabriole legs, attached to a round base, support the orin with elegance. Decorative scalloped edges, intricate cutouts, and gold accents add to its grandeur. Although the stand shows some age-related wear, including minor knocks, scratches, and slight peeling of the lacquer, these imperfections only add to its character. As with many of these precision-cut stands, which are created without the use of glue, the wood has naturally shrunk over time, and the base can separate from the body of the stand. This does not impact its functionality (the small poles can be easily slotted into the holes in the base) but please handle with care, or consider securing with glue for added stability.
Zabuton (Cushion)
The zabuton cushion is a beautiful piece in its own right, featuring a patchwork design of red and purple brocade with intricate dark gold floral embroidery. At the center, a green tassel adds a touch of elegance. This sturdy cushion provides solid support for the orin, ensuring it sits securely while adding an extra layer of luxury to the display. The cushion is in very good condition.
Rinbo (Striker)
The wooden rinbo striker, with its reddish-brown lacquered handle, is covered in soft suede at the striking end. Though the lacquer has peeled slightly and the suede has darkened with age, these signs of use only enhance the vintage charm of this piece.
Add a touch of spirituality, serenity, and timeless beauty to your home decor with this rare and striking orin set. It’s also an ideal size for use in meditation classes or workshops.

ORIN GONGS
Japanese Buddhist singing bowls are called, ‘Orin’ or ‘Orin Gongs.’ They are used for prayer and worship in Japanese temples. In temples the orin gong is used with a small hand bell, a set of gongs and a stone or metal plate. Small orin are used at homes for private altars (Butsudan). Orin are placed on colorful cushions called zabuton.
Orin gongs come in a variety of sizes. Generally the bigger the bowl is, the deeper the sound becomes. Traditionally orin were used to accompany chanting and meditation. Nowadays they are used for the same purpose and also for music making and meditation as well as for relaxation and personal well-being. They have become popular with music therapists and sound healers, yoga and meditation practitioners.
